Sao Paolo Rail Line Construction, Brazil

ALSTOM has recently won a contract for the construction of a new rail line in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The global company is specialized in energy and transport infrastructure. Its Brazilian headquarters are located in Sao Paolo.

The project is considered a major milestone in the expansion of the railway network for Sao Paolo city (Brazil) and represents a significant boost for the Brazilian rail industry.

RAIL LINE FIRST PHASE

The new Sao Paolo rail line is the first phase of a line which is planned to be extended as far as Chacara Klabin station (Vila Mariana region, Brazil) in the future.

The primary objective of this project is to contribute to the integration of the different mass transit systems in the south and southwest sectors of the Sao Paolo metropolitan area. This will facilitate the commute of middle and low income populations, reduce travel times and improve the quality, comfort, and safety of public transportation.

The line will improve the flow of street traffic in these areas by reducing the number of buses, which will help reduce environmental pollution caused by vehicle emissions.

The project also calls for institutional strengthening measures to endow the Secretaria de Estado dos Transportes Metropolitanos de Sao Paulo (STM) and the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) with modern management systems and procedures for efficient administration of the integrated metropolitan transit system.

Specifically, the overall project consists of three sub projects:

• Construction and operation of a 9.3 kilometre section of Metro Line 5 between Capão Redondo and Largo Treze
• Up grading of the CPTM South Line
• Institutional strengthening

METRO LINE 5 COST

The construction of Metro Line 5 is expected to attract investment in the order of about $294 million. For the construction phase the following type of works will be required:

• Assembly and installation of electric power supply systems, including the construction of primary, rectifying, and auxiliary substations, installation of transmission lines and distribution networks to supply power to the trains and to auxiliary services at the stations;
• Construction and/or realignment of the track, tunnel excavation and preparation of the land on which the marshalling yards, shops, and auxiliary structures will be located;
• Installation of reinforced concrete and/or metal structures for the elevated track, tunnels, transfer terminals, and other auxiliary structures;
• Installation of track materials;
• Finishing, electric and sanitary installations, signalling and landscaping;
• Improvement of access routes to stations and transfer terminals along about 35 kilometers, including upgrading pavements and pedestrian walkways, eliminating critical points and signalling.

SISTREM CONSORTIUM

ALSTOM, the leading company of the Sistrem Consortium, has been selected by Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) to build the new 9 km rail line from Capão Redondo to Largo Treze.

The Sistrem Consortium was formed to undertake the project on a turnkey basis. Within it, ALSTOM is responsible for the overall technical management of the project, the systems integration, the provision, from its factories in Brazil and France, of 8x6 car Metropolis train sets, the signalling system, the operations control centre and various items of electrical and mechanical equipment for the stations.

Other members of the Consortium are:

• Siemens (Brazil and Germany), who will provide the high and medium voltage power supply equipment and auxiliary inverters for the rolling stock

• Adtranz (Brazil), who will provide rectifiers and auxiliary substations, the overhead line and elements of the signalling system

• CAF (Spain), who will provide couplers for the rolling stock
